1st Ever Any-a-thon Resounding Success

If you went down to Bournemouth beach on Saturday 17th April 2010 you would have seen a big surprise, hundreds of Rotarians, Rotaractors and members of the public taking part in Bournemouth Rotaract’s first ever Its Childsplay Any-a-thon!

‘It’s Childsplay’ is a Rotary initiative to support and increase public awareness of the great work done by the various children’s hospices in the UK.

The event, which raised over £5000 for local charity Julia’s House, invited anyone from any walk of life, with any ability to walk, cycle, run, bounce or skate their way to Bournemouth Pier approach from four starting points.

Not only did participants get to enjoy the stunning sunshine on the day but Bournemouth Rotaract also organised entertainment to add that special something to the event.  The Bournemouth Carnival Band and facepainters added to the fun and increased donations given.

The event raised much-needed funds for local children’s hospice Julia’s House. Children’s hospices are special places. They are dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives by providing relief hospice care for life limited children. Children and their families receive respite care every year, free of charge. Typically, public funds cover 5% of the cost; the rest has to be raised by the Hospices to run this uniquely valuable service.  You can find out more about Julia’s House at www.juliashouse.org.

Amy Davies, event organiser alongside Oliver Cheetham, both members of Bournemouth Rotaract, said “It’s been hard work to organise but seeing everyone having so much fun on the day and knowing that we’ve helped to raise so much money for an amazing charity has made it all worth-while.  I’m proud to be a member of Bournemouth Rotaract and pleased to be doing our bit to help our community.”

Club President Lynette Davies added, “It goes to show just how much young adults can achieve when they put their minds to it.  But of course we couldn’t have done it on our own so we’d like to thank the Julia’s House staff, the volunteers from Marks & Spencers and all the Rotarians and Rotaractors who gave up the day to help man a stall, hand out flyers and give advice”.
