Challenge Homelessness

On Saturday 17th September six members of local voluntary organisation Bournemouth Rotaract Club were sponsored to take to the streets for 24hours aiming to experience a glimpse into the challenges faced by those homeless in the area. All funds raised were for local organisation Michael House, which empowers homeless people to rebuild their lives and get back on the pathway to independent living.

During “Challenge Homelessness” the group were inducted and trained in selling the Big Issue, with District Chairman and President of the club Lynette and Amy Davies taking up a pitch in the town centre after being badged up and issued magazines.

Amy told the Echo “Selling the Big Issue was a real challenge; most people declined although they were polite but there was little interest in the magazine. Those that wanted to help offered money but told me to keep the magazine so I had one extra to sell. It was quite disheartening as I felt I wasn’t doing my job properly. It’s easy to walk past Big Issue sellers on the streets without considering how tough their job is. They are trying to earn a living and are taking the next step forward, they should get more respect for the effort they put in.”

The team also paid a visit to Muriel’s Soup Kitchen at Landsdowne Baptist Church where they were welcomed by a substantial hot meal and the friendly support and advice of the local homeless community. The Rotaractors expressed their admiration for the volunteers that provide food for the homeless. “These people give up their time and work tirelessly to provide for those in need despite the many challenges they face as several soup kitchens have recently been closed in the area. Without these services many people would go hungry, in the 2hours running on Saturday 120 people came through the doors”.

By nightfall the group bedded down in a local church yard ready to face a long cold night outdoors, with just a layer of cardboard and a sleeping bag to keep them warm. “The sleep-out was certainly an intense experience, we didn’t really sleep as we were on high alert in case anyone came into our shelter. We’d heard first-hand about the dangers on the streets and were quite wary of these” explained Lynette Davies.

Following the 24 hour challenge, Bournemouth Rotaract hosted presentations at the Bourne Spring Centre detailing their findings and celebrating the dedication and hard work of local services that support the homeless. The line-up included talks from Michael House, the Big Issue, BCHA, Salvation Army and The Soup Run and were attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth. The weekend was rounded up with Rotaract’s Community Lunch, providing plenty of food and gifts to approximately 40 homeless people.

The Rotaract Club of Bournemouth expressed their intention for this to be just the beginning of a long-term commitment to supporting the homeless community in our town. “The issue of homelessness in Bournemouth goes much deeper than official figures suggest. Those accessing local services may not all be sleeping rough, but they are living below the poverty line and need our support. Homelessness could happen to any one of us so it is important not to turn a blind eye. We hope we can go some way in making a difference to those around us and feel this weekend has been a good start, with £1000 raised for Michael House already, which will be doubled through The Big Give in December.”
